Teachers’ Code Switching Inside and Outside Classroom
Abstract
In bilingual or multilingual society, Code switching is prevalent language used either in formal and informal situation. This study aims at finding out typology of code-swictching, the percentage and the fucntion of each type. The data were collected by audio recording. The study also observed the teacher used code-switching when teaching English. It was found that types of code-switching are inter-sentential switching, intra-sentential switching and tag switching. The percentage of each type that was used by the teacher is for the inter-sentential switching 37 %, for intra-sentential switching 43 % and 20 % for tag switching. The function of teacher’s code switching is topic switch, affective function, and repetitive function. This study needs further study on the effect of such code-switching in teaching practice.
