An Analysis of the Theta Role of the Verbs Give, Bring, and Take

Abstract

The purpose of this research paper is expected to be beneficial to give knowledge and information about the theta role of verbs give, bring, and take in the ‘at the first sight’ novel by Stephen J. Cannell, specifically for beginners who study grammar and vocabulary that use the primciple of theta role. This research used the descriptive analysis method. It is a method that is used with the description of something factual and continued with analysis. The results show that verb give has five theta roles: agent, theme, experience, locative, and recipient; verb bring has three theta roles: agent, theme, and experiencer; and verb take has eight theta roles: agent, theme, locative, goal, source, experience, beneficiary, and force. Those are four types; they are transitive, ditransitive, idiomatic, and metaphor.
